The Friendship Centers Lee Nutrition and Friendship At Home Programs art partnering with The Harry Chapin Food Bank to distribute boxes of food to low-income home-bound seniors in Lee County through the Friendship Food Bag Program.
The goal is to improve the nutrition of older low-income seniors by enrolling them in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP). Friendship At Home volunteers will determine eligibility.
The food bank will provide monthly boxes containing a variety of food including canned fruits and vegetables, juice, dry beans, rice, peanut butter, cereal and cheese. Food is provided through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and will continue as long as the elder needs it.
In addition Friendship Centers Lee is working to connect its seven dining sites located in elder facilities with Harry Chapin Food Bank to make them community distribution centers for this program.
