Senior Friendship Centers Health Clinic Collier is featured on the cover of The Forum , the Official Magazine of the Collier County Medical Society, July/August, 2011. An article titled Staying Afloat: The Friendship Health Clinic, by Edward Banaszak, MD, PhD, Medical Director and Betty Gamel, ARNP, and Center Director of the Friendship Health Clinic, is featured on page 13 of the publication.
SFC's Health Clinic Collier has served Collier county since 1985, providing care for seniors in need, and saving the community thousands of dollars in emergency room care. The clinic had more than 5,000 patient visits in 2010 and helped secure medications valued at more than $118,000 from pharmaceutical companies and their foundations. There is a 20% increase in patient demand per year over the last four years. Conservatively estimated value of the professional services exceeds one million dollars per year.
Patients are asked to pay, based on their ability to pay. Often this is zero, but generally ranges between $15-$30 per visit, although the actual cost per visits is $50, and $95 per dental visit. The result is an annual deficit of $100,000 per year, depleting a dwindling endowment established 25 years ago. A desperate call to action is being issued by the Medical Society, encouraging medical personnel to donate time or to service to the clinic, or to make a monetary contribution.
