The Patterson Foundation gave more than $310,000 to match investments made toward earned-income plans developed by the nonprofits participating in its Margin & Mission Ignition initiative — generating a total investment of nearly $870,000. The match strengthened the organizations’ fundraising efforts for startup and growth capital for entrepreneurial endeavors designed to generate revenue that will support their work in the community.

Margin & Mission Ignition helps regional nonprofits build entrepreneurial capacity by adopting and implementing earned-income strategies through 18 months of learning opportunities and consultation. No Margin, No Mission, a social enterprise and national consulting firm engaged by The Patterson Foundation, has worked with each nonprofit that opted into the Margin & Mission Ignition labs in 2016 while continuing to guide the organizations involved in the initiative since 2015. The nonprofits participating in the initiative raised nearly $560,000 collectively for their earned income plans through campaigns that began in November 2016.

“A key phase of moving from business planning to implementation was the facet of raising the necessary capital,” said Debra Jacobs, president and CEO of The Patterson Foundation. “The Patterson Foundation’s match was like a ‘Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval’ that sparked interest by other mission investors. It was impressive to see how each organization shared the opportunity for their earned income plans, successfully securing the necessary capital.”

The nonprofits will use the funds from the match to implement and evolve the services outlined in their earned-income plans. No Margin, No Mission is able to provide additional technical assistance and guidance to organizations that wish to expand their earned-income plans or launch new ventures through The Patterson Foundation’s continued contributions of time and resources.

The following organizations sought investors for their 2016 Margin & Mission Ignition earned-income plans:

  • Charlotte Players: Langdon Playhouse Theatre — increasing the number of offerings available to patrons and maximizing ticket sales for all performances.
  • Florida Maritime Museum: The Folk School at Florida Maritime Museum — a new venture offering hands-on skills classes formulated to help people connect with their past, share stories, build community and grow an appreciation for the history of Cortez.
  • Historic Spanish Point: Venue Rental for Weddings, Events and Meetings — increasing the frequency of onsite bookings throughout the year to maximize venue usage and boost income from site rentals.
  • Literacy Council of Sarasota: Language Workshops and Small-Group Instruction — expansion of existing services to organizations in need of small-group English classes for their employees, clients or parents.
  • The Manatee Players: Venue Rental for Meetings and Events — increasing the frequency of onsite bookings throughout the year to maximize venue usage and boost income from site rentals.

The following organizations sought investors for an expansion of an existing project developed through Margin & Mission Ignition or a second earned-income venture:

  • Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity: Habitat ReSale Stores — improving efficiency and expanding operations to boost revenue and help build more Habitat houses.
  • Pines of Sarasota: Ready & Steady, A Plan for Better Balance — expanding the reach of services geared to helping people prevent falls.
  • The Friendship Centers: Caregiver Services — enhancing the existing array of offerings to seniors who are in need of daytime care.

“They helped our affiliate create the most comprehensive business I have ever worked on, from market research to finances and everything in-between needed to be successful,” said Mike Mansfield, CEO of Charlotte County Habitat for Humanity. “I am happy to say that because of the guidance we received from our Margin & Mission Ignition consultants, this was an easy sell to our donors. We are extremely pleased that in Habitat Cleanout & Removal’s first year of operation, we earned enough revenue to build one Habitat home.”
