From caregiver to volunteer, and now employee!

Attending the Caregiver Support Group at SFC provided Michael with solace, guidance, and the strengthto navigate his caregiving responsibilities. Week after week, he found comfort in knowing he was no longer alone, allowing him to become more focused and less overwhelmed.

Back in 2008, Michael Cochrane’s world turned upside down when his husband, Ron, was diagnosed with Early Onset Alzheimer’s. The diagnosis was a game-changer for both of them. Unfortunately, after notifying friends and family about Ron’s situation, a mass exodus slowly began, leaving Michael and Ron to face their challenges alone.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged when Michael came across an advertisement for the Senior Friendship Centers (SFC). Intrigued, he reached out and discovered a community that would forever change his life.

Attending the Caregiver Support Group at SFC provided Michael with solace, guidance, and the strength to navigate his caregiving responsibilities. Week after week, he found comfort in knowing he was no longer alone, allowing him to become more focused and less overwhelmed.

Motivated by his newfound support system, Michael enrolled in the Powerful Tools for Caregivers Class, offered by SFC. Through this program, he learned that caregiving wasn’t solely about surviving but also about thriving. He understood the importance of self-care, enabling him to provide better care for Ron. With this newfound knowledge, Michael eventually felt empowered enough to graduate from the Caregiver Support Group, having grown in resilience and understanding.

Impressed by his dedication and passion, SFC recognized Michael’s potential, offering him a significant role within the organization. Today, he is a valued member of the SFC team, playing a crucial part in supporting caregivers and raising awareness about the vital resources available.
