My Journey: Record your stories for future generations
Everyone’s journey is a story.
Through the years, you’ve accumulated a lifetime of knowledge and wisdom. Now, thanks to My Journey, a new initiative being launched at the Friendship Centers in Sarasota, you can record and preserve your story, in your words, to share for years to come. Imagine what a meaningful gift this could be to your children, grandchildren and future generations. What a great idea for Mother’s or Father’s Day, a birthday, holiday or a family reunion!
“At the Friendship Centers, we know that everyone has a story – full of lessons learned, obstacles overcome and joys to remember. We’d like to help preserve these stories!” said Director of New Programs Terry McGannon.
With the help of a generous patron, The Friendship Center in Sarasota now has an office on the second floor that has been converted into a small studio with microphones and recording equipment.
When you sign up to record your story, you will be given a My Journey information packet, with tips on how to tell a great story, along with suggestions for questions. Interviews normally last from 25 to 40 minutes.
Preparing ahead of time will greatly improve your interview. Think about what you want to share, and make a list of 5-10 questions in advance. Have a family member – a relative, child, grandchild, or close friend – do the interview for an extra-personal touch, or you can be guided through the interview by a Friendship Centers staff member. Stories are archived at the Center, and each person gets a keepsake CD of the interview to share with family, neighbors, children and grandchildren! A suggested donation of $50 will help cover recording costs.
